Before I start, let me briefly explain what the whole "first impressions" is all about. So before I decided to start the blog for my senior project, we all (students) needed some kind of mentor to guide us. After I found my mentor (Dr. P), he hopped on board with my project and we decided to do a writing exchange. This whole idea is where he would share a song I've never heard about, write about it, and then give him a song back in exchange so he can write about it. Rules are we can't do any kind of background research before we listen to the song. So nevertheless, here is my opinion of R.E.M.'s "Drive."

R.E.M.'s "Drive" starts out with a very haunting acoustic riff that builds up with the equivalent of a haunting voice. It's not long before the drums kick in and provide a sort of up-beat rhythm to get things moving in a nice pace. The drums are later dropped and we are returned to the haunting acoustic riff that we were greeted with, along with a orchestra of violins. This builds up along with a exciting guitar part until the very end, where we are again greeted with haunting acoustic riff that ends it all.
R.E.M. sounds very familiar, and I'm pretty foolish not to know who they are. Their song "Drive" surely does bring that exciting emotion and vibe that all music lovers would appreciate. To me, it's probably the most exciting calm song I've heard in a while. It's amazing to hear the progression through the song, taking the listener through an almost haunting journey. Not to forget, but the lyrics also bring that long forgotten poetry that's rare today.
To me, I overall enjoyed R.E.M.'s "Drive" and I look forward to exploring more of their music. In a way I can see how this isn't a very "attractive" song to get into at first, but after a couple listens you surely become an addict. It's a smart and exciting track that I believe will get music lovers to appreciate what good music is all about... the journey it "Drives" us through.
